Training programme

The Outlook Fostering training programme is updated continuously to reflect the needs of foster carers, support staff and local authorities and changing legislation. Typically, courses cover areas including child protection, effective recording, identity and self-esteem, first aid and preparing young people for independence.

New carers

A monthly training programme runs throughout the year, and all carers must attend all modules within the first 18 months of fostering.  These modules include:

  • Safe caring
  • Child protection
  • Effective recording
  • Working with children who have been abused
  • De-escalation and safe handling
  • Managing and promoting contact
  • Valuing diversity and promoting equality
  • Identity and self-esteem
  • First aid
  • Health and safety
  • Health of looked after children
  • Education of fostered children/young people
  • Advocating for and empowering children and young people
  • Preparing young people for independence
Carers need to attend all of the above modules to fulfil the Commission of Social Care Inspectorate and National Standards.

Where appropriate, carers will be encouraged to complete NVQ Level 3, Caring for Children and Young People. Our aim is to help carers achieve this award by their third year of fostering.

Existing carers

Enhanced training is also available to experienced carers. These include:

  • Life story work
  • Composing the adult
  • Substance misuse
  • Promoting children’s well-being
  • Introduction to therapy
  • Stress management
  • Dealing with conflict, confrontation and disputes
  • Children and decision making
